Looking Past the Surface

I have a sweet tooth, so I pretty much love all kinds of desserts. Whenever I think about chocolate, pie, cake, ice cream, candy, or anything with the tiniest bit of sugar in it my mouth starts to water (My mouth is watering just sitting here writing this post!). If I could, I would eat nothing but sweets because that’s how much I adore them. Unfortunately, I cannot eat sweets all of the time, so I’ve learned to only indulge every once in awhile. And because I can only eat sweets every now and again, I have to make sure to make it count when I do decide to eat something sugary. That’s why when I choose to treat myself, I tend to eat pie.

Pie comes in so many different flavors, which is why I love it so much. The golden crust mixed with the right type of filling can make any pie lover’s heart happy. You can’t tell what’s on the inside of the pie just by taking a look at the outside That’s why whenever I first see a pie, it’s like getting a surprise because you don’t know what you’re getting. I mean just think about it. If you happen to be someone who has never had pie before then you definitely wouldn’t be able to guess how amazing pie tastes just by looking at the outside of it. At a first glance the brown crust of the pie doesn’t look very appetizing. You wouldn’t be able to guess just by looking at it that inside of that pie is nothing but sweet goodness. You can’t tell that there’s blueberry, apple, sweet potato, pumpkin, cherry, or chocolate on the inside just by glancing at the outside, which is why you have to look past the surface to find out the wonder that’s on the inside.

The best part of the pie (the part that makes it unique) is on the inside. That is why you can’t just judge something by how it looks on the outside. In the same token, you can’t just judge someone by how they look on the outside. It’s what’s on the inside that counts. And just like with the pie, the inside is where the best part is located. Just think about yourself. The best parts of you (the parts that really make you you) are found on the inside. It’s not about how young or attractive you are. The part on the inside makes you really special. On the inside is where you’ll find the fighter, the survivor, the friend, and the lover. On the inside you discover the stories that help to make you unique. You can’t find out these things about someone just by looking at them. You have to dig a little bit deeper to find the good stuff. You have to be willing to work at it. If you just ate the top part of the pie, sure you would have an enjoyable experience, but if you go in just a tad bit deeper you get to experience the good stuff. The same goes for people. You can just admire someone from the outside if you want to, but the real reward comes when you put in some effort and actually take the time to get to know someone. Think about the friends that you have in your life. You wouldn’t have these people as your friends if you didn’t take the time to find out a little bit about them. If you had just stayed on the surface you would have never had the chance to get to find out the good stuff about them. But you didn’t. You made the decision to get to know them and now you’re better for it.

Positive thinker, it’s easy to just write someone off by looking at them. We make assumptions and decide that we don’t want to get to know someone because they look a certain way, but when you do that you may end up missing out on getting to know someone wonderful. Don’t make that mistake positive thinker. So the next time you decide to write someone off just because of how they are on the outside I want you to remember pie. Remember that you can’t tell what’s on the inside of a pie just by looking at it, and the same goes for people. If you want to find out how amazing someone really is then you have to get to know them and see what’s on the inside.
